In America, it is known simply as the “O” Factor. As the reigning talk-show queen, trusted arbiter of taste and general adviser on everyday life, Oprah Winfrey has persuaded millions of devoted viewers to buy everything from bras to books.

Now the world’s richest black person is aiming to transfer her Midas touch to the world of politics, as she tries to market Barack Obama as the first black American president.

Oprah Winfrey: hosting a celebrity fundraising party

The billionaire television star is hosting a celebrity-packed fundraising party for the Democratic senator at her $64 million southern Californian estate, in what promises to be Hollywood’s glitziest political gathering of 2007. Such is Winfrey’s media clout that the “O for O” Factor, as it may now become known, could well help Sen Obama into the White House.

The guest list at her vast oceanside Georgian-style mansion is being kept secret, but famous Obama supporters such as the actors George Clooney, Halle Berry and Jamie Foxx, the singer Beyoncé Knowles and the film studio moguls David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg are expected to attend.

However, Winfrey, 53, says that her endorsement of Sen Obama, 46, a fellow adoptee of the city of Chicago, is about much more than filling his coffers.

“My money isn’t going to make any difference,” Winfrey told her fellow chat-show host Larry King. “My value to him, my support of him is probably worth more than any other cheque that I could write.”

The largest categories among her loyal audience are women and blacks, both crucial electoral targets for Sen Obama, who is seeking to make up ground on Hillary Clinton, the front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Obama Celebrates 46th Birthday Birthday at SCLC Event

Obama celebrates birthday at SCLC event

By ADRIANNE M. MURCHISON
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 08/05/07 If Barack Obama becomes President, plenty of Atlantans will likely recite their “remember when” story of how they celebrated with the then-senator on his 46th birthday.

“You know I had to work on my birthday,” Obama told a crowd of 1,200-plus Saturday night at the Marriott Marquis. “When you’re running for president, you don’t get a day off.”

Sen. Barack Obama, left, is given a happy birthday message by Rev. Joseph Lowery, right, and Xernona Clayton during the First Ladies Awards Celebration.

To compensate, the crowd on hand for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s First Ladies Awards Celebration sang “Happy Birthday” during a standing ovation.

Obama was in town to speak at the event, which honored women in communications.

Folks dressed in formal suits and evening gowns mingled patiently outside the hotel’s imperial ballroom in anticipation of his much-anticipated appearance.

The sitdown dinner started nearly an hour late but drew a crowd ranging from Mayor Shirley Franklin to many young children, perhaps there to collect material for their own “remember when” stories.

After opening remarks and a solo of “God Bless America” by opera singer Ernestine Dillard, Obama made his way to the stage.

The crowd enthusiastically responded to his motto for the night: “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

And after months of traveling to campaign rallies across the country, the senator has noticed that American citizens are also sick and tired too, he said.

“The reason people are hungry for change is they are fed up with how the government won’t even try to do something about the injustices,” he said,

Obama compared the justice of Scooter Libby to Genarlow Wilson, the Atlantan currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for having consensual sex with a teenage girl. Obama compared what the average working citizen pays in taxes to Paris Hilton, who inherited her wealth.

Both times, he drew loud cheers.

Some on hand Saturday night said they supported the senator but remained curious to know more about his platform and the issues he represents.

“Jobs are dwindling and I want the troops out of Iraq,” said Demeeka Mhoon, 29, an accountant who lives in Atlanta. “I want to know what he’s actually going to do.”

Robert Hatcher, a storage consultant for Hewlett-Packard, said he too is sick and tired of the status quo.

Like Mhoon, the Iraq war is top priority with him.

“I made a pledge that I’m not voting for anyone who voted for the war in Iraq,” the Marietta resident said.

Every time he gets a paycheck, Hatcher said he sends the senator’s campaign $100.

“I think a lot of people do that,” Hatcher said. “He’s the person that will do what’s good for the country.”

Obama to Vibe: Rap Creates Own Reality

Posted by DallasBlackBlog on Sunday, August 5, 2007

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Barack Obama is now officially hot — he’s on the cover of Vibe magazine.

In a profile for the 14th anniversary issue of the music and lifestyle glossy, the Democratic presidential candidate clarifies his views on rap. Though he had a high-profile meeting with rap star Ludacris last fall, he was also quoted by The Associated Press in April as saying that rappers were “degrading their sisters. That doesn’t inspire me.”

Obama told Vibe that he was misquoted — he was talking about the culture as a whole, not rappers in particular.

“I stand by exactly what I said, which was that the degrading comments about women that (radio host Don) Imus said is language that we hear not just on the radio, not just in music. We ourselves perpetuate that, and we all have to take responsibility for that.”

So why put a politician on the cover of a magazine that had 50 Cent fronting last month’s issue?

“Because for the first time since VIBE was launched in 1993, a political figure has burst on the scene and fired up young people in a major way,” Vibe editor in chief Danyel Smith said by e-mail. “Because regardless of who wins the election, the Senator will have inspired many new voters to the polls. Because Obama is frank, brilliant, vibrant, and not cynical — all things that make him a perfect VIBE cover.”
