Phil Francis, the Dallas ISD’s head athletic trainer, said it typically takes a football player 10 to 14 days to acclimate to practicing in the heat. An athlete who has been working outside in June and July, even in this summer’s milder conditions, is still going to be prepared for August.

DISD football coaches were briefed again on heat safety during districtwide meetings last Thursday.

Carter coach Allen Wilson said. “You do a lot more monitoring of the kids and make sure they are hopefully hydrated properly and doing the things it takes.” Carter’s first practice is today. Wilson said he doesn’t anticipate the players being any more or less ready for the heat because of the atypical summer weather.
